CHAPTER SIX
The man was clearly deranged. Gillian was already exhausted by early afternoon, but he felt the need to press on to the MacDonald’s keep. It was late evening before they set up camp in a forest within a twenty-minute walk of the fortress. “I should be able to get in and out quickly from here, and I will not have to worry about you being alone for long,” Kennan told her.
“I think I should go with you when you retrieve the sword,” Gillian said, hiding a yawn behind her hand. She hated the idea of him being trapped by the MacDonalds. She would not be able to go for help if she did not know he had been captured until the next day.
“Gilly, that makes no sense at all. You canna make yourself intangible as I can. I need to be sure you are here at the camp, while I slip in and out without ever opening a door.”
She frowned, but she had to agree with his argument. They had spent an hour in dagger practice that morning, and she could now use the dagger well up close, but she could not yet throw one. She would be certain to keep her bow and arrow within arm’s reach to keep herself from danger. “I will stay at the camp, but you must wake me before you leave so that I can defend meself if necessary.”
“I dinna like the idea of leaving you, but I canna take you along with me.” He sighed softly. “Mayhap we should leave you in a camp further from the keep.”
She shook her head. “Nay. That would not work for me. I will stay here with you, and that is that.” Stepping toward him, she placed her palm flat against his chest. “I dinna regret coming with you here. Our time together has been wonderful.”
His arms came around her, and he rested his cheek against her head. “I am pleased you are here. It has been good for us.” He sighed, returning to his responsibilities again. He was not just a husband. He did not have that luxury. Nay, he was the laird of a mighty clan of highlanders who needed him to keep his wits about him. “We canna make a fire tonight. It would be visible from the keep. I brought along some oatcakes for our supper, knowing this would happen. We will eat them and use our tartans to keep warm.”
“Oatcakes sound wonderful.” Whether her words sounded sarcastic or not, Gillian meant them with all her heart. She despised having to try to make a meal, and if he had not taken control of cooking the rabbit the night before, they would have starved. She was pleased not to have to feel like it was her responsibility to cook the meal.
After they had eaten, they made love slowly in the darkness. Kennan waited until Gilly was asleep before creeping silently from the camp. He knew the only way he would get the
